A Verse To Ponder

Selecting a verse at a time from each Surah in sequence and contemplating on it.

What is pondering?

To deeply think about, reflect, or contemplate it for the purpose of or by using the following approach:
1. Exploring the main message in a verse.
2. Noting possible hidden meanings (beyond TAFSEER or interpretation).
3. Noting or imagining possible implications, if any, in one’s life.
4. Experiencing or feeling the effect of the verse on the heart and mind
5. Possible lessons learned from the verse
6. Noting or contemplating special linguistic aspects
7. Knowing and connecting with the revelation circumstances of the verse – if any.
8. Noting the context of the verse(s) – before and after – and possible connection or association with other Surahs / chapters.
9. Interacting as needed with the verse in response to certain phrases or descriptions (by making dua’, or tasbeeh, etc.).

History, importance, and ruling of TADABBUR / pondering:

Tadabbur was practiced by the prophet (PBU), his companions, and on. (see Hadiths below) Tadabbur is commanded by Allah (see corresponding verses below). Prominent scholars / Imams of Fiqh have promoted and encouraged Tadabbur. (see below) Tadabbur is considered for the most part obligatory. However, in some instances it may just be recommended. Tadabbur should be practiced along with other responsibilities related to the Quran, such as:
1. Reading / reciting
2. Learning , understanding, knowing the rules, meanings, etc.
3. Memorizing
4. Teaching
5. Implementing / applying / acting upon
6. Advocating, defending, protecting

Benefits of pondering

1. Increases Iman / faith / piety
2. Increases connection with Allah
3. Gains deeper understanding of Quran, its verses and their hidden meanings
4. Stimulates critical thinking – an active engagement for the mind
5. Nourishes the spirit
6. Reflects positively on our life, and promotes positive transformation
7. Increases wisdom
8. Bestows mental tranquility

Do they not then ponder over the Quran? Or are there locks upon some hearts? (47:24)

By pondering over the Quran, as if Allah wants us to open our hearts and minds, and, therefore, be able to unlock the secrets of the Quran
Listen

Do they not then ponder over the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have certainly found in it many inconsistencies. (4:82)

This is one of the many challenges declared in the Quran. That, in contrast to any other literary work, the Quran has no inconsistencies

How can you deny Allah? You were lifeless and He gave you life, then He will cause you to die and again bring you to life, and then to Him you will ˹all˺ be returned. (2:28)

This verse makes you think about life and death, and did humans exist in one form or another before they were "given life"?
Listen

˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the disbelievers, “Soon you will be overpowered and driven to Hell—what an evil place to rest!” (Quran 3:12)

This is yet another one of those challenges, indicating that the Quran is a divine text. How? by giving a prophecy that was sure to be true and not be challenged. In this case, the prophecy was that the disbelievers will be soon defeated (during the prophet's time)

Had it not been for Allah’s grace and mercy, a group of them would have sought to deceive you ˹O Prophet˺. Yet they would deceive none but themselves, nor can they harm you in the least. Allah has revealed to you the Book and wisdom and taught you what you never knew. Great ˹indeed˺ is Allah’s favour upon you! (4:113)

What is the difference between "the book" and "wisdom"?

Indeed, those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have fallen into disbelief. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Who has the power to prevent Allah if He chose to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone in the world all together?” To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. He creates whatever He wills. And Allah is Most Capable of everything. (5:17)

Can you feel the rhetoric in Allah's powerful words?

To Him belongs whatever exists in the night and day, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (6:13)

other meaning for سكن giving by interpreters is "become silent" or "ceased to move". Notice how "night" came before "day".

O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah’s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful. (7:26)

The literal meaning for ريش is feathers. however, given the context, it is used to denote "adornment". Righteousness could be both symbolic or referring to the actual clothing being decent. Was clothing an integral part of human existence? an instinct?
Listen

O believers! Respond to Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah stands between a person and their heart, and that to Him you will all be gathered. (8:24)

One major function of Allah's message through his messenger is to breathe life into people, who otherwise would be like dead! think of this analogy "between the person and his heart"
Listen

And if anyone from the polytheists asks for your protection ˹O Prophet˺, grant it to them so they may hear the Word of Allah, then escort them to a place of safety, for they are a people who have no knowledge. (9:6)

إستجار does not only mean asking for protection, and not any protection in general. Rather, it is a specific term for times of war or a state of animosity. If such person asks for protection, it's more of seeking refuge or asylum or amnesty.
Notice the priority in offering such asylum: first offer guidance by giving them the opportunity of hearing Allah's message, then taking them to their secure asylum place!

He is the One Who made the sun a radiant source and the moon a reflected light, with precisely ordained phases, so that you may know the number of years and calculation ˹of time˺. Allah did not create all this except for a purpose. He makes the signs clear for people of knowledge. (10:5)

This is one of the many scientific challenges of the Quran! dwell on it!

Alif-Lãm-Ra. ˹This is˺ a Book whose verses are well perfected and then fully explained. ˹It is˺ from the One ˹Who is˺ All-Wise, All-Aware. (11:1)

Well perfected in all aspects! Besides "fully explained" it could also mean "fully detailed" as there are these 2 types of verses: perfected and detailed! Is that also a reflection of Allah's creation? and why perfection first then detailing?
Listen

“My Lord! You have surely granted me authority and taught me the interpretation of dreams. ˹O˺ Originator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Allow me to die as one who submits1 and join me with the righteous.” (12:101)

Beautiful way to make Dua' (supplication)! By mentioning Allah's bounties and past favors, and then asking Allah!
Listen

the Gardens of Eternity, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, ˹saying,˺ (13:23)

This reward is awaiting those who performed certain deeds (mentioned in the previous verse,13:24, which includes being patient. Note the significance placed on family bonds - both in this life and even in paradise!
Listen

He has ˹also˺ subjected for you the sun and the moon, both constantly orbiting, and has subjected the day and night for you. (14:33)

Throughout the Quran, Allah mentions "subjecting" many things for humans. This is the only verse in which this subjection is constant / continuous! (so, not just constantly orbiting, but constantly being beneficial). The verb دأب means continued non-stop!
Listen

So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.” (15:29)

Revisit the whole question of honoring the creation of Adam, and the stand of Angels vs. that of Iblis! and, perhaps, the connection between that incident and our prostration to Allah!
Listen

He created humans from a sperm-drop, then—behold!—they openly challenge ˹Him˺.16:4

In the previous verse, Allah mentioned the creation of the universe (the heavens and earth). Contemplate the connection and contrast. Especially the fact that as great the creation of the universe is, yet it does not present an open challenge to Allah!

˹And it will be said,˺ “Read your record. You ˹alone˺ are sufficient this Day to take account of yourself.”(17:14)

This is one of many manifestations of Allah's justice . . for you to be your own judge!

˹Now, perhaps you ˹O Prophet˺ will grieve yourself to death over their denial, if they ˹continue to˺ disbelieve in this message". (18:6)

Listen

This is˺ a reminder of your Lord’s mercy to His servant Zachariah, (19:2)

There’s been some dispute or variations among the linguist interpreters on this Aya, mainly as far as grammar and parsing. However, given the meaning, it’s more important to ponder its idea. What kind of mercy was extended to Zachariah? And what was its significance? Why Allah wanted to remind of it?

We have not revealed the Quran to you ˹O Prophet˺ to cause you distress, (20:2)

The beginning part of this Surah is one of the most powerful in the Quran. In this simple, short, but strong Aya, Allah is emphasizing the objective of ease, facilitation, avoiding distress, especially as it relates to the Quran.

Listen

We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything in between for sport. (21:16)

This is a powerful statement by Allah (AW) to convey the seriousness of the creation and of our physical world that we call the universe. the question is: Do we take it as seriously?
Listen

The Day you see it, every nursing mother will abandon what she is nursing, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden ˹prematurely˺. And you will see people ˹as if they were˺ drunk, though they will not be drunk; but the torment of Allah is ˹terribly˺ severe. (22:2)

Besides the obvious objective of depicting the mayhem of the "hour", Does Allah, in this verse, want us to think about those innate human activities of nursing the baby and the impact of catastrophic events on our brains?
Listen

After that you will surely die, (23:15)

There are 2 articles of emphasis in this short verse. Are we to understand that human death is of utmost certainty? and why is it emphasized more than resurrection (which is mentioned in the next verse)?
Listen

only the believing men and women had thought well of one another, when you heard this ˹rumour˺, and said, “This is clearly ˹an outrageous˺ slander!” (24:12)

Surat An-Noor (24) teaches us many important social lessons. This verse is one of them: that believers should always think well of each other and avoid rumors.
Listen

Once it sees them from a distance, they will hear it fuming and growling. (25:12)

Why did the Aya start with the hellfire “seeing them” and not them “seeing it”? Is it because the hellfire is of more respect than those disbelievers?
Listen

Perhaps you ˹O Prophet˺ will grieve yourself to death over their disbelief. (26:3)

This is one of those Ayas that convey a sense of critical thinking and emotional intelligence. It’s like when we, in astonishment, say to someone who goes out of his way: “really? You want to kill yourself over that?! Suggesting that you should do what you can and leave the outcome to Allah. All said in in 3 little words!
Listen

And when they came across a valley of ants, an ant warned, “O ants! Go quickly into your homes so Solomon and his armies do not crush you, unknowingly.” (27:18)

How positive, caring, responsible and initiative-taker that ant was! Another amazing thing about ants is their exoskeleton, which is made up of hard glass-like material called chitin. Hence why the word used in this verse was "Shatter" rather than smush or or a similar verb used for soft substances!
Listen

We inspired the mother of Moses: “Nurse him, but when you fear for him, put him then into the river, and do not fear or grieve. We will certainly return him to you, and make him one of the messengers.”(28:7)

The story of Musa (PPBUH) is one of the marvels of the Quran. Particularly this account of his birth and early life and his mother. As depicted in this verse, Allah is conveying, among other things, how it is definite that Musa will be returned to his mom (by using the ascertaining letter in Arabic).
Listen

The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of a spider spinning a shelter. And the flimsiest of all shelters is certainly that of a spider, if only they knew. (29:41)

What an amazing example! We can derive important lessons from this little insect, the spider. Not just from the weak physical structure of its home, but also from its family and social order.

So you ˹O Prophet˺ certainly cannot make the dead hear ˹the truth˺. Nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs and walk away (30:52)

What a powerful description of those who choose to be closed-minded!

He created the heavens without pillars—as you can see—and placed firm mountains upon the earth so it does not shake with you, and scattered throughout it all types of creatures. And We send down rain from the sky, causing every type of fine plant to grow on earth. (31:10)

Heavens without pillars? It warrants a thought and a research.

They abandon their beds, invoking their Lord with hope and fear, and donate from what We have provided for them.(32:16)

Describing the ones who believe so in their Lord's verses (mentioned in the preceding verse) that they will fall in prostration when they are reminded. That they give up sleep and get up to invoke! Hence, the importance of night invocation!

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward. (33:35)

10 traits that apply equally to men and women. What so special about these traits, and about being shared by men and women?!

Say, "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allah, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment. (34:46)

An open invitation to rethink stereotypes and brainstorm the truth.

Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy - none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds - none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (35:2)

What a reassuring and calming effect, especially in times of confusion or stress

Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register. (36:12)

A powerful reminder of death and the mark left behind. We are held accountable for that mark!

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant (37:35)

And those who were mindful of their Lord will be led to Paradise in ˹successive˺ groups. When they arrive at its ˹already˺ open gates, its keepers will say, “Peace be upon you! You have done well, so come in, to stay forever.” (39:73)

Compared to the verse 39:71, here the gates are already open!

Listen

Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allah. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allah, the One, the Prevailing (40:16)

Everyone and everything existing in the universe is either directly in the hands of Allah or a temporary trust. Thus, on that day, even the angel of death will cease to exist and Allah will be the inheritor of all!
Listen

Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah" and then remained on a right course - the angels will descend upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.(41:30)

What a great Guarantee & assurance before dying!

Listen

Allah is Subtle1 with His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might. 42:19

ponder: Allah being subtle, yet selective in provision, powerful and mighty!

Certainly, We have made it a Quran in Arabic so perhaps you will understand. 43:3

And indeed, it is—in the Master Record1 with Us—highly esteemed, rich in wisdom. 43:4

Ponder these 2 verses: What is the significance of being in Arabic? and what exactly is "the master record?

Wait then ˹O Prophet˺ for the day ˹when˺ the sky will be veiled in haze,1 clearly visible, 44:10

overwhelming the people. ˹They will cry,˺ “This is a painful torment. 44:11

Ponder these 2 verses:

Could this be a major environmental and catastrophic eye-opener? or is it pure apocalypse?

And they argue, “There is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die; others are born. And nothing destroys us but ˹the passage of˺ time.” Yet they have no knowledge ˹in support˺ of this ˹claim˺. They only speculate. 45:24

The clear call for evidence-based thinking in the Quran! (In another verse Allah says: Say to them: present your evidence! 2:111

We have commanded people to honor their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship. Their ˹period of˺ bearing and weaning is thirty months. In time, when the child reaches their prime at the age of forty, they pray, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favors which You blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please You. And instill righteousness in my offspring. I truly repent to You, and I truly submit ˹to Your Will˺.”45:15

The brain reaches full volume at 40, after which starts declining at rate of 5% per decade!

“Say, I am not the first messenger ever sent, nor do I know what will happen to me or you. I only follow what is revealed to me. And I am only sent with a clear warning.” 46:9

It's a proclamation of many things! The focus is on the message, not the messenger?
Listen

Indeed, ˹O Prophet,˺ We have sent you as a witness, a deliverer of good news, and a warner, (48:8)

Main role of the messenger?

O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it˺ so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done. (49:6)

The importance of verifying info

Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ created humankind and ˹fully˺ know what their souls whisper to them, and We are closer to them than ˹their˺ jugular vein. 50:16

The use of "anatomy" in the Quran

There are ˹countless˺ signs on earth for those with sure faith, as there are within yourselves. Can you not see? (51:20, 21)

A challenging call to explore the signs on earth as well as in the human being, that would confirm the faith (in the hereafter?)

And by a book lined (organized) (52:2) * made available to all (published) in thin form (pages, etc.) * (52:3)

Is Allah swearing by the importance of writing, publishing etc? (using "book" instead of "the book") (as in surah "Al-Qalam" 68)

The approaching ˹Hour˺ has drawn near. (53:57)

It has been approaching already, and now, it's very close!

Indeed, We have created everything, perfectly preordained. (54:49)

Ponder about the concept of exactness!

The abundantly merciful * has taught the Quran (55:1,2)

This is a very special Surah. It begins with mentioning some of the great attributes / bounties of Allah, beginning with his most important one / fine name "The Abundantly Merciful", followed by second greatest, "him teaching the Quran". "Has taught the Quran" can carry several meanings / interpretations.

So I do swear by the positions of the stars—56:76 and this, if only you knew, is indeed a great oath—56:76

Allah did not swear by the stars themselves, but by the their positions! and then in the next verse asked us to ponder how great that swearing is!

Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and with them We sent down the Scripture and the balance ˹of justice˺ so that people may administer justice. And We sent down iron with its great might, benefits for humanity, and means for Allah to prove who ˹is willing to˺ stand up for Him and His messengers without seeing Him. Surely Allah is All-Powerful, Almighty. 57:25

This Surah (#57) has many interesting verses to ponder. This particular verse mentions "Hadeed" (Iron) for which the surah is named after. Iron happens to have atomic isotope numbering 57!

Indeed, Allah has heard the argument of the woman who pleaded with you ˹O Prophet˺ concerning her husband, and appealed to Allah. Allah has heard your exchange.1 Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

This verse, like the name of the Surah, is an alert about dialogue, argument, or discussion, that carries important lessons.

O believers! Be mindful of Allah and let every soul look to what ˹deeds˺ it has sent forth for tomorrow.1 And fear Allah, ˹for˺ certainly Allah is All-Aware of what you do. (59:18)

The importance of preparing for tomorrow / the hereafter

Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair. (60:8)

The importance of dealing kindly and fairly with people even in conflicts

O believers! Why do you say what you do not do? 61:2

A rhetorical question?

He is the One Who raised for the illiterate ˹people˺ a messenger from among themselves—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, for indeed they had previously been clearly astray—

Compare this verse to 2:129, where "teaching them the Book and wisdom" preceded "purifying them". Here, it is switched!

But Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do. 63:11

ponder the last 2 verses (63:10,11)

Your wealth and children are only a test, but Allah ˹alone˺ has a great reward. 64:15

How are children and wealth a test?

Let the man of wealth provide according to his means. As for the one with limited resources, let him provide according to whatever Allah has given him. Allah does not require of any soul beyond what He has given it. After hardship, Allah will bring about ease. 65:7

(Simple facts)

O Prophet! Why do you prohibit ˹yourself˺ from what Allah has made lawful to you, seeking to please your wives? And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 66:1

_________
A rebuke to the prophet?!

˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving.67:2

Ponder the creation of death!

And you are truly ˹a man˺ of outstanding character.(68:4)

The impact of the Prophet's character on the message!

And as for ’Ȃd, they were destroyed by a furious, bitter wind (69:6)

_____________
"Bitter wind": A universal expression of furious?

from Allah, Lord of pathways of ˹heavenly˺ ascent, (70:3)
________

Part of the "Unseen" tenet of belief. Ponder the nature of these pathways?

Then I surely preached to them publicly and privately (71:9)

Ponder the persistence of Noah!

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened ˹to the Quran,˺ and said ˹to their fellow jinn˺: ‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous recitation. (72:1)
