Importance of raising Children in Islam
"O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones" (66:6). Interpreters said of this verse that it implies teaching and raising children as righteous people.
The prophet (PPBUH) was the best role model for that. One of his direct commands in that regards was when he urged Muslims to engage their kids in Salat starting at the age of seven, as Salat is notable for being a tool of fine-tuning the person.
Methods of upbringing children
Among many methods available and recommended by educators, three stand out as most successful in keeping with Islam's objectives:
1. Role modeling
2. Habituation - using both Targheeb (attractiveness / positive reenforcement) and Tarheeb (warning)
3. Guided Reenforcement: Reward & Punishment
Other specific and critical methods, which are geared towards instilling principles and values in the child, include:
1. Salat and Wadu' (ablution) habituation
2. Piety (Consciousness of Allah)
3. Islamic Manners
4. Learning Dua' (supplication)
5. Media contro (Phone,TV, etc.)
6. Toys & Games: Guided selection and use
7. Avoiding downgrading, scolding, hitting the child
8. Hobbies, Aptitude: Explore and develop
9. Stories (Quranic, etc.)
10. Questions: Not ignoring the child's questions
11. Self Esteem: Enforcing the child's self esteem
12. Special attention to health, fitness, and appearance.
