Islamic Periods

The history of Islam and Muslims will be highlighted here in simple and orderly fashion, covering all the major periods, and focusing on the civilization perspective.

Note: Dates will be in "CE" until the start of the Hijrah dating which will be in "AH" (After Hijrah)

The periods break down, approximately, as follows:

1. Background/ beginnings, ancient Islam: Technically, Islam in its broader and unified meaning, as ordained by Allah, begins with Adam (PBUH).  
2. Jahiliyah (period of ignorance - pre-Islamic period): Prior to 610 CE.
3. Bi'thah (Muhammad's mission): Beginning of revelation to Hijrah / Mecca period: 610-623 CE 
4. Medina Period: 1 -10 AH
5. The Well-Guided Caliphate (Khulafa' Rashidoun) period: 11-40 AH
6. The Umayyad period: 41-132 AH
7. The Abbasid period: 132-656 AH
8. The special case of Andalusia period: 92 - 897 AH
9. Post-Abbasid period, Muslim "States": 656-687 AH
10. The Othmani period / Khilafah (Ottoman): 687 - 1342 AH
11. Post Khilafah, and contemporary Islam: 1342 AH -Present
