Facing Life Challenges During COVID-19
By Islamic Living
Allah (AW) declares in Surat "Al Balad": "indeed we have created humankind in constant struggle" (90:4). It is the reality that the world is facing right now with this pandemic (COVID-19), that is creating perhaps the toughest of challenges for people. Allah wants us first to not be shocked by that. This was then declared in yet another powerful but simple reiteration in Surat Al-Baqara (2:155). The question then becomes: how to face that and deal with it. Well, Allah has, by the same token given us the remedy (patience, etc.), and the prophet (PPBUH) did as well.
However, besides these major principles, people can and should, as needed, utilize other strategies and even seek help if necessary. The pandemic, just as it carried with it many challenges and stresses, has also opened new and promising opportunities. The key take from all that is hope. That entails positivity, utilizing the means, using time properly, learning the lessons, seeking experts' advice, etc, etc.

World Hearing Day: Importance of hearing in Islam
By Islamic Living
There are 1.5 billion people around the world with some degree of hearing loss. By 2050, the number is projected to reach 2.5 billion. Hearing loss may result from many causes and contributing factors, many of which are preventable. Quranic references about hearing, vision and their related contexts are not at all infrequent, emphasizing their significance for humans. By the same token, the prophet (PPBUH) has considerably included hearing and vision as part of his Dua’ (invocation), as important part of the bounty of health that we are supposed to maintain, protect and promote.
The Pandemic: First Birthday
By Islamic Living
The 11th of March 2021 marks one year since the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. It was one year of “the years” (using the Quranic term Sineen, plural of Sana, which means year). Not just any year, though, but a year of hardship. If Allah wants to express a year of ease and goodness, he uses Aam (also means year). So, what did this pandemic year (Sana) do before it’s even being weaned? It has Flipped the scales, changed the norms, and replaced the usual concepts with peculiar ones. In many peoples’ eyes, it also has: Shaken the still, and silenced the loud . . Interrupted the pathways of life, and lengthened the strings that bind . . Hastened the surrender of the invincible, and humbled the heads that were high . . Masked the bold faces, and many others, unveiled their clouds . . Put to sleep cities that never slept, and awakened remote bird nests . . Created long lines of people seeking a piece of bread, or loading a pallet to be hauled . . Turned the phone into a clinic, for a patient to be treated or to be diagnosed . . Poured fuel on suspicion, admonition, lack of intuition and made insinuation abound . . Made countries regress, transgress, repress, oppress and recess . . And filled homes with depression, aggression, grief, misery and distress . . However, to the believer, it was a year, just a year in the generic sense, that has: Offered many lessons to be learned, opportunities to be exploited, concepts to be pondered, bounties to be grateful for, and instances to exhibit patience. Made soles and spaces purified and Satanic evils impound . . Limbered the dainty and humbled the proud . . Awakened the conscience and made the righteous stand out in the crowd . . Lastly, how about pausing and asking yourself the question: what did it do to you ? May Allah bestow healing and health, and spread his peace on the entire world. Amen.
Twakkul & Rizq
By: Islamic Living
The verse in Surah Al-Tawbah goes “Say, “Nothing will ever befall us except what Allah has destined for us. He is our Protector.” So in Allah let the believers put their trust.” (9:51). A number of similar verses are also found in the Quran. The prophet (PPBUH) also said to the man who asked him about his camel: should I tie it or leave it untied and trust in Allah? “Tie it and trust in Allah”- thus further explaining to us what trust actually means: Which is to utilize the means, do what’s necessary, then trust in Allah. If people apply this simple formula, not just with regards to their provision and livelihood, but with regards to everything in this life, they would be happy about the outcome. It is reported that the prophet (PPBUH) said: “if you all depend on Allah with due reliance (trust), he would certainly give you provision as he gives it to birds who go forth hungry in the morning and return with full belly at dusk”! (Tirmidhi). People often miss out the point in this hadith though, which is that we need to first do what the birds do: Go forth in the morning, not sit and wait till the dusk comes!
