Iftar
(Breaking the fast)

Hasten!

You want to follow the Sunnah of the prophet (PPBUH) and hasten the Iftar (breaking of the fast) at sunset.
You also want to have something light, easily digestible, that quickly replenishes the nutrients you missed during the day. The best for that usually is the traditional dates and water.
A little later, perhaps, you want to include in your meal the kind of foods that follow the same principles. Avoid hard to digest foods, sugary and extra fatty foods and drinks. Otherwise, as with any nutritionally-sound meal, it should be a balanced meal.

Suhur
(Pre-Dawn snack)

Delay!

You want follow the Sunnah of the prophet (PPBUH) and delay the Suhur (pre-dawn snack).
Here, you want the kind of food that is long acting, provides the necessary nutrients and is rich in fiber and fluids.
dates are agin very useful here, but also things like yogurt, bananas, prunes, and the likes are important. Do not load up excessively on water or fluids. Rather try to get that gradually during your eating period.

Fasting Period

Not Only Food & Drink

During the day of fast, a Muslim is supposed to abstain not only from food, drink, sexual activities, but also from all untoward behavior, no matter how small. In other words, to be more pious, that is the expectation. In fact, many scholars contend that one major purpose of abstaining from food and drink is disciplining the sole to abstain from evil. Prophet Mohammed (PPBUH) summarizes that when he said: "If one does not eschew lies and false conduct, Allah has no need that he should abstain from his food and his drink."

Non-Fasting Period

Worship, Eat & Drink Smart, Relax & Have Fun

During the night, Muslims pray the Taraweeh or Quiam (special voluntary prayer in congregation, during which a good amount of Quran is read). A host of other voluntary worship activities may be performed, as well as reading and learning more, and contemplating. The night of power (Qadr) which falls towards the end of the Ramadan, is the most sacred night in which more of these activities are carried out. But, of course during the night, one can also eat & drink and have fun within the permissible limitations. The key guideline there would be to do smart (not to over do it).
